What can I expected regarding discharge from Sacred Oak Medical?

The treatment team, along with the patient and their family, makes the decision regarding discharge based on the patient’s symptoms and needs. Patients are given an estimated length of stay upon admission, which may change during the hospital stay based on individual progress and need. All patients are required to have aftercare appointments prior to being discharged. The assigned therapist will coordinate with the patient to connect them to an existing provider or to refer to new services for continuity of care.  Sacred Oak Medical Center attempts to complete discharges prior to 11am. Please coordinate transportation on the day of discharge to accommodate this time frame. Notify the assigned therapist as soon as possible if this will not be feasible.

What About Costs?

We accept most commercial insurance plans and private pay. We also are in the process of obtaining our Medicare number which will allow us to accept Medicare patients. We request that you provide insurance information prior to the admission so that we may verify your benefits and make arrangements for any out of pocket costs. Please call our assessment or business office and they can answer any additional questions regarding your benefits.

What are the visiting hours?

Visiting hours vary by individual unit and can be found here. Our first priority is the safety of our patients and guests, so we ask that visitors keep all personal items such as purses, bags, or any sharp items in their vehicle as they are not allowed on the units. Outside food and drink is also not allowed and photo ID is required to visit.

What can I expect during a typical day at Sacred Oak Medical Center?

The treatment day varies by program but there are many common elements which will be explained at admission. During the first 24 hours, a patient will complete a psychosocial evaluation, a nursing assessment, a history and physical examination and a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. A typical day includes a visit from your Doctor, group therapy, educational activities and other focused events that are structured to help with your recovery and progress.

Is this confidential?

Absolutely. Rigorously enforced laws of confidentiality help protect your rights to privacy. We cannot confirm or deny your presence in our facility without your written permission.

Can I make and receive phone calls?

Yes, adults may make calls during most non-therapy times, but please leave cell phones at home. To protect your privacy you will be assigned a confidential ID number at admission. To receive calls from your family or friends they will need to use this number. We ask that family members wait to call until listed phone times so as not to disrupt the treatment program.

What can I expect from the treatment team?

  • Psychiatrist: He or she directs medical management while at Sacred Oak. Patients will be seen by a psychiatrist within the first 24 hours of admission.
  • Registered Nurses: Are responsible for daily activities and medical/emotional needs. The RNs participate in behavior management and administer medications as ordered by the physician.
  • Mental Health Technicians: Assist with daily activities. They supervise program groups and activities, take vital signs and accompany patients to off unit activities.
  • Recreation Therapist: Assists with recreational activities as tools to enhance your self-esteem, problem-solving and social skills.
  • Social Worker/Therapist: Organizes discharge plan with the patient, family, psychiatrist and community. The therapist provides group therapy for patients on the unit.

What can I expect regarding treatment at Sacred Oak Medical Center?

Sacred Oak Medical Center provides short-term, acute, crisis stabilization. Like most acute mental health hospitals, we primarily use group therapy as it can be much more effective for acute recovery. The treatment team at Sacred Oak Medical Center encourages all patients to include their family/significant others in their recovery. The assigned therapist will talk to designated family members and set up a family session, as appropriate to treatment. All patients are on unit restriction for a minimum of 24 hours. At that point, the physician may determine if the patient is safe to attend off-unit activities and eat meals in the cafeteria. Patients are expected to participate in the unit activities unless their attending physician indicates they are too ill to attend programming. Patient phones are not available while groups are in session.

What am I NOT allowed to bring in?

For the safety of our patients and staff, the following items are not permitted:

  • No outside food/candy/gum
  • Handheld video games
  • Electronic items (Radio/TV/CD player/Tape player/PDA/ Laptop)
  • Glass/Metal/Hard plastic objects/containers (including underwire bras)
  • Aerosol Sprays/Flammable Liquids
  • Lighters/Matches (staff will light cigarettes during break times.)
  • Guns/Knives/Weapons/Ammunition/ Scissors
  • Pornographic Materials
  • Cell phone/Pager (will be secured in locked area with limited access upon admission)
  • Recording Devices
  • Drug Paraphernalia
  • Personal hygiene products containing alcohol (including but not limited to: cologne, body spray, mouth wash)
  • Picture frames (picture without frame is permitted)
  • Rope/String/Yarn
  • Spiral/Wire binder notebooks
  • Hosiery, Scarves, belts, shoe strings, draw-strings, hoodie sweatshirts
  • Drugs & alcohol
  • Hair dryers, curling irons or hair straighteners
  • Nail polish/Files/Polish remover
  • Jewelry (except wedding rings)*
  • Razors
  • Stuffed animals, blankets and pillows from home
  • Clothing items with a negative/offensive message, drug or paraphernalia depiction
  • Revealing clothing

*We recommend that patients do not bring large amounts of money, valuables or items of great sentimental value to the hospital.  If patients misplace an item, they should alert the staff immediately and they’ll help to search for it, but Sacred Oak Medical Center is not responsible for any items lost during the patient’s stay.

What should I Bring?

  • Clothing for at least 3-4 days (we have washers and dryers on the unit)
  • Slippers or house shoes
  • Slip on shoes (shoe strings will not be permitted)
  • Sweater or light jacket (the facility may run cold for some people)
  • Personal hygiene items (nothing with alcohol as an ingredient) *

*The facility will have the basic hygiene items for each patient (toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, soap and deodorant)
