Ketamine Infusion Therapy is a Breakthrough in Adult Depression Treatment

Ketamine Infusion Therapy is a Breakthrough in Adult Depression Treatment

In 2017, 17.3 million adults in the United States experienced a severe episode of depression, and over 16.1 million have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder. Of those 16.1 million, 38.3% are not receiving adequate treatment for this debilitating illness. However, Ketamine Infusion Therapy has become an effective treatment for adult depression.

How Does Ketamine Infusion Therapy Work For Adults?

Ketamine works much faster and more efficiently than typical antidepressants. Antidepressants may take weeks, if not longer, before they start having an effect on our patients, but ketamine works within a few hours and in much smaller doses.

Ketamine blocks the NMDA receptors. In doing so, it stimulates the AMPA receptors, which stimulates new receptors and synapses in the brain. For neurotransmission to occur, brain cells must send a neurochemical to the synapse. The synapse resides between neurons, and essentially works as a bridge that allows neurons to send signals to other neurons, which is how our body transmits messages to the brain. But there’s a second component necessary for this to work. In order for a neighboring cell to get the message and continue passing it along, the neurochemical has to bind to a receptor, which is simply a protein found in the brain cells.

By stimulating synapses and receptors, Ketamine aids in their connection and communication, which significantly reduces severe depressive or suicidal thoughts, like those that occur in patients who suffer from Major Depressive Disorders (MDD).
