A migraine is a severe headache or a throbbing pain on one or both sides of the head. At times, a migraine can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound to the point where it can interfere or disrupt daily activities. While genetics and various environmental factors may be a cause, chronic migraine headaches may be an indicator of a generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or depression.
According to studies compiled by the Anxiety and Depressions Association of America (ADAA), migraine headaches can precede the onset of mental disorders. Researchers have found that 11% of participants in a study conducted in 2009 had migraines and a variety of disorders, including major depression, dysthymia, bipolar disorder, pain attacks, and substance abuse disorders. In particular, studies have found that people who struggle with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) experience migraines or other types of headaches.
How Ketamine Infusion Therapy Can Help Treat Migraines
While Ketamine Infusion Therapy has been used primarily in treating depression and post-traumatic stress syndrome, medical researchers and physicians are discovering that Ketamine can also help alleviate the pain and discomfort caused by severe and chronic migraines.
According to the American Society of Anesthesiologists, a study of 61 patients found that almost 75 percent experienced an improvement in their migraine intensity after a 3 to 7 day course of inpatient treatment with ketamine. Although Ketamine is occasionally used to induce general anesthesia, it has to provide powerful pain control for patients with many painful conditions in lower doses than its anesthetic use.
Eric Schwenk, MD and director of orthopedic anesthesia at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, states that "Ketamine may hold promise as a treatment for migraine headaches in patients who have failed other treatments."
Along with our Ketamine Infusion Therapy, Sacred Oak Medical Center also offers Group Therapy Programs for those who prefer a more communal environment. Our Therapy Groups provide support for individuals who are struggling with behavioral, mental or chemical dependency issues on their road to recovery, health, and wellness. This approach has also proven highly effective in helping individuals stay on coarse with their recovery. Before choosing to administer Ketamine Infusion Therapy or any other treatment option, it is vital for the individual to receive a proper assessment.
